Daniel Varlet was born in Cologne in 1597, a son of Nicolaes Varlet and Francina Jacobs. As his siblings did, he came to live in Amsterdam. On the 21st of January 1623 Daniel Varlet and Sara Stafmakers announced their intention to marry in Amsterdam. [1]

His wife, Sara Stafmakers, was baptized on the 4th of March 1599 in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, [2] a daughter of David Stafmakers and Catharina Willekens.

The children of Daniel Varlet and Sara Stafmakers were:

He married in Amsterdam on the 30th of April 1650 to Anna Wechter, [11] who was buried in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam on the 8th of December 1682. [12] Jonathan died 14 years after their marriage and was buried in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam on the 21st of October 1664. [13]

He married first, Alida de Kempenaer, and second, Anna Gribius. Nicolaes was buried in the Walloon Church in Amsterdam on the 13th of March 1685. [22]

xiv. Francoijs Varlet, baptized in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam on the 9th of August 1640. [23] Sponsors were Nicolaes de Pon and Barbara Stafmakers.

Daniel Varlet died in 1642, leaving behind his wife, Sara Stafmakers, with twelve underaged children, the oldest 18 years old and the youngest only 16 months. His brother Pieter made the following entry in his family register. [18] He writes (translated):

1642. Daniel Varlet, our brother, is resting in the Lord in Dunkirk at the home of Squire Franciscus Hiel, at half past one in the night between the 1st and the 2nd January, of sound mind, in the presence of cousin Jaques J. van Keulen, and is buried on the 3rd ditto outside Dunkirk at the Geuzenkerkhof. God grant him a holy resurrection.

On the 23rd of October 1662 five daughters of Daniel Varlet and Sara Stafmakers bought a house together, from Jan Baptiste van Rensselaer. [24]  The house was situated in the Wolvenstraat in Amsterdam, and had been purchased by Killiaen van Rensselaer on the 6th of December, 1617. These five daughters were Francina (age 35), Sara (33), Cornelia (31), Cathalina (30) and Anna (26), all of whom were at that time unmarried. Their mother, Sara Stafmakers was then 63 years old. Perhaps Sara had indicated that she was ready to retire, or wished to sell her house. She died less than two years later.

The Aantekening der Familie der Varletten, the family register of births, marriages and deaths, which had been started by Pieter Varlet (1598-1661), was now in the keeping of his daughter Francijna (1631-1717). About the death of her aunt, she writes (translated): [18]

Sara Stafmaker, widow of Daniel Varlet, died around 8 o'clock on Monday morning, the 21th of July 1664 in Hoorn, after she had been sick for thirty-three weeks following a severe accident, and was buried the next Thursday the 24th ditto in the Oude Kerk.

The nature of the accident that had befallen Sara Staffmaker Varlet was not disclosed, but she died at age 65, the mother of fourteen children, and grandmother of several.
